Reading Comprehension  (开始Reading Comprehension计时)

Directions: There are 4 reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D).

Passage One Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage: Is there a "success personality"? Some winning combination of qualities that leads almost inevitably to achievement? If so, exactly what is that secret success formula, and can anyone develop it? At the Gallop Organization we recently focused in depth on success, probing the attitudes of 1500 prominent people selected at random from Whos Who in America. Our research finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of the most important, that is common sense. Common sense is the most prevailing quality possessed by our respondents. Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top score in this quality. And 61 percent say that common sense was very important in contributing to their success. To most, common sense means the ability to present sound, practical judgments on everyday affairs. To do this, one has to sweep aside extra ideas and get right to the core of what matters. A Texas oil and gas businessman puts it this way: "The key ability for success is simplifying. In conduction of meeting and dealing with industry reducing a complex problem to the simplest term is highly important." Is common sense a quality a person is born with, or can you do something to increase it? The oil mans answer is that common sense can definitely be developed. He attributes his to learning how to debate in school. Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others, learning from their and your own mistakes. Besides common sense, there are many other factors that influence success: knowing your field, self-reliance, intelligence, the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity, relationships with others, and of course, luck. But common sense stands out. If you develop these qualities, youll succeed. And you might even find yourself listed in Whos Who someday.

Passage Two Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage: The New World to which Columbus came at the end of the fifteenth century was not, as we are tempted to believe, a wholly savage and untamed place. The people lacked some of the basis of European civilization, it is true, for instance, horses were unknown to them, and they had never discovered the use of wheel. But there were many accomplishments to offset such handicaps. In the political domain these original American, as early as the tenth century, were building mighty empires; and in realm of intellectual achievements, they developed a cosmographic science dealing with the constitution of the whole order of nature that was far superior to that of Europe. It would be a mistake, however, to believe that the New World, as a whole, was an oasis of civilization in the European sense of the term. America had many faces, and to its conquerors it offered a variety of as pats. Christopher Columbus, when be went ashore on the island of San Salvador -- one of the Bahamas -- was greeted by the Lucayas, an agricultural and artistic people who typified the "noble savage" of popular legend. The Spaniards, on the other hand, were shortly to meet a completely different sort of native, the human-eating Caribbean. Such diversity is reflected in the history of the pre-Columbian New World, a history so complex that it had taken historians almost five centuries of study in order to find out its main lines.

26. According to the first paragraph, the people living in the American before the arrival of Columbus, were rather _____.

27. We can infer from the passage that before Columbus arrived in the new World _____.

28. According to the passage, the American of the tenth century _____.

30. We can infer from the passage that pre-Columbian history _____.

Passage Three Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage: Psychologists now believe that noise has a considerable effect on peoples attitudes and behavior. Experiments have proved that in noisy situations (even temporary ones), people be have more irritably and less cooperatively; in more permanent noisy situations, many people cannot work hard, and they suffer from severe anxiety as well as other psychological problems. However, psychologists distinguish between "sound" and "noise". "Sound" is measured physically in decibels. "Noise" cannot be measured in the same way because it refers to the psychological effect of sound and its level of "intensity" depends on the situation. Thus, for passengers at an airport who expect to hear airplanes taking off and landing, there may be a lot of sound, but not much noise (that is, they are not bothered by the noise). By contrast, if you are at a concert and two people behind you are whispering, you feel they are talking noisily even if there is not much sound. You notice the noise because it affects you psychologically. Both sound and noise can have negative effects, but what is most important is if the person has control over the sound. People walking down the street with earphones, listening to music that they enjoy, are receiving a lot of decibels of sound, but they are probably happy hearing sounds which they control. On the other hand, people in the street without earphones must tolerate a lot of noise which they have no control over. It is noise pollution that we need to control in order to help people live more happily.

31. According to the passage, people _____.

32. "Sound", as defined by the psychologist, _____.

33. People waiting at an airport _____.

34. People enjoy listening to music,_____.

35. We can conclude from the passage that we need to control noise pollution if _____.

Passage Four Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage: Becket not only traveled light, he lived light. In all the world he owned just the clothes he stood up in, a full suitcase and a bank account. Arriving anywhere with these possessions, he might just as easily put up for a month or a year as for a single night. For long stays, not less than a month, he might take a furnished flat, sometimes even a house. But whatever the length, he rarely needed anything he did not have with him. He was, he liked to think, a self-contained person. Becket had one occasional anxiety: the suspicion that he owned more than that would fit comfortably into the case. The feeling, when it came, was the signal for him to throw something away or just leave it lying about. This was the automatic fate of his worn-out clothes for example. Having no use for choice or variety, he kept just a raincoat, a suit, a pair of shoes and a few shirts, socks and so on; no more in the clothing line. He bought and read many books, and left them wherever he happened to be sitting when he finished them. They quickly found new owners. Becket was a professional traveler, interested and interesting. He liked to get the feeling of a place by living in it, reading its newspapers, watching its TV, discussing its affairs. Though Beckets health gave him no cause for alarm, he made a point of seeing a doctor as soon as he arrived anywhere. "A doctor knows a place and its people better than anyone", he used to say. He never went to see a doctor; he always sent for one; that, he found, was the quickest way to confidences, which came out freely as soon as he mentioned that he was a writer. Becket was an artist as well. He painted pictures of his places and, when he had gathered enough information, he wrote about them. He sold his work, through an agent, to newspapers and magazines. It was an agreeable sort of life for a good social mixer, and as Becket never stayed anywhere for long, he enjoyed the satisfying advantage of paying very little in tax.

36. What do we know about Becket's possessions?

37. Becket took over a flat when _____.

38. How did Becket feel about taxation?

39. If anything worried Becket, it was _____.

40. Becket did not keep books because _____.
